Would You Spend $34,775 for a 2017 Honda Civic Type R?

The Honda Civic Type R’s starting price may have been leaked in a series of photos posted to enthusiast forum CivicX.com. The photos show Type R models arriving at the docks in Baltimore, Md., and one shot even shows the Monroney sticker and the car’s $34,775 total price (including $875 destination).

The original poster says he took the pictures as the cars arrived at the port from the U.K. A man was placing stickers on the windows before the cars were loaded onto trailers, and the shooter was able to get a clear shot of one of them. According to the sticker, the MSRP for the Civic Type R Touring is $33,900 before destination charge. That’s right around the mid-$30,000 range that Honda promised. We can also see the features lists, which matches up with what we know about the U.S.-spec Type R.

If the price is indeed $34,775, the Type R undercuts the starting price of the 2017 Ford Focus RS, which makes more power and boasts all-wheel drive, by $2,220. The Type R is also $2,220 cheaper than a 2018 Subaru WRX STI and starts $5,420 less than a 2017 Volkswagen Golf R. So far Honda has only announced a Touring trim level for the Type R, which offers a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, 540-watt audio system with 12 speakers, LED headlights, sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and more.

We’ve reached out to Honda for confirmation of the Type R’s starting price but have yet to hear back.

1964 DB5 Sold for $727,995 Highlights Bonhams 2017 Aston Martin Sale

Aston Martin’s Newport Pagnell Works facility — one of the oldest automobile manufacturing sites in the world, according to Aston Martin — played host earlier this month to the 18th annual Bonhams Aston Martin Sale, which features Aston cars and automobilia exclusively.

Although the last car built here rolled off the line in 2007, production will soon commence again with the neo-classic DB4 GT continuation series of cars. Until then, there were plenty of classic Astons available at the Bonhams event.

One of our favorites of the day was Lot 240, a 2004 V-12 Vanquish that was among the last cars to be built at the Newport Pagnell factory. This particular car shows only around 6,000 miles of use and has been given a few of the Vanquish S model’s cosmetic upgrades, including the revised dashboard and some badges, though it does not have the S model’s extra 70 horsepower. The Vanquish sold for $118,112, and we hope the owner might have some room left in the budget to replace the paddle-shift manual transmission with a full manual conversion, a service Aston Martin Works is happy to offer — for a price.

The auction’s top-seller was Lot 209, a 1964 DB5, the only DB5 at the event. Delivered new to Glasgow, Scotland, in 1964, the seller bought the car in 1972 when he was just 21 years old and drove it regularly until the late ’90s. It shows signs of that usage, with a somewhat scruffy looking engine compartment and both wear and light staining to the light-colored interior. Many DB5s are resprayed silver to match the famous example in the James Bond movie series, so it is refreshing to see this one carry fresh medium-blue paintwork commissioned just last year. The best DB5s in the world are now million-dollar-plus cars, but this one in “driver condition” with some mechanical and cosmetic needs sold well at $727,995.

A 1996 V8 Sportsman Estate was one of the more unconventional cars at the sale. Based on a period V8 Coupe, this shooting-brake version is one of only three built and one of two special ordered by a pair of Swiss brothers. This car has an interesting history, with the engine rebuilt by the factory after just 6,000 miles before being sold to its next owner. Today, the Sportsman presents very well and would make a unique addition to a serious Aston Martin collection. It seemed a fair deal at $437,575 considering both its rarity and that it sold in the U.K. with a strong market for estate cars.

If you’re current on your tetanus shot and were looking for a project car, Lot 202, a 1957 DB2/4 Mk II, sold for $70,822, a little more than its low estimate. This once-handsome Aston was parked for engine repairs in the 1970s after passing through a handful of owners. It now appears to need a full restoration, including plenty of rust repair. Ten years ago, this probably would have been a parts car, broken up by a specialist. With the value for a strong DB2/4 in the mid-$200,000 range, it’s unlikely the buyer will be able to restore this example for any amount close to what a ready-to-drive car would bring. The seller won this round.

Last but not least, the car we would most like to get some seat time in was Lot 236, a 2000 Vantage Le Mans. Number 29 of just 40 examples built, the Vantage Le Mans was built to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Aston’s 1959 win at Le Mans with Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori behind the wheel of a DBR1/2. Styling accents, including the ducts in the hood and the vented front fenders, recalled the race-winning car, and the 5.3-liter supercharged V-8 was uprated to 604 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque and was paired to a honest-to-goodness six-speed manual gearbox. The Vantage Le Mans brought a healthy $401,272.

TOP SELLERS
1964 Aston Martin DB5: $727,995
1961 Aston Martin DB4 “Series III” 4.2-liter: $517,440
1989 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante “X-Pack” 7.0-liter: $502,919

Once again, Regan Smith is driving the No. 43 in place of Aric Almirola

Regan Smith is driving Richard Petty Motorsports’ No. 43 car for the third-straight week.

The team said Wednesday that Smith will drive in Sunday’s race at Dover. He’s served as the substitute driver for Aric Almirola since Almirola fractured a vertebra in a crash at Kansas Speedway on May 13.

Smith finished 22nd in the Coca-Cola 600. He was fourth in the qualifying race for the All-Star Race, his first race driving for Almirola.

Smith has also made five starts in the Camping World Truck Series this season. His best finish in the Trucks came in the season-opening race at Daytona where he finished sixth.

While this is the third-straight race Smith has driven for the No. 43 car, no driver has been announced for the June 11 race at Pocono. If Smith is going to drive in more races for the team while Almirola recuperates, we propose that RPM make that announcement at some point in the near future instead of on a week-to-week basis.

2017 BMW M6 GT3 Art Car Goes Digital

BMW Art Cars have been around since 1975, when artist Alexander Calder got his creative hands on a BMW 3.0 CSL. Since then, a range of artists that includes John Baldessari to Andy Warhol have created their own rolling works of art.

The latest to join the ranks is China’s Cao Fei. She created a unique design for BMW Art Car #18 that requires a downloadable app to fully appreciate its beauty and uniqueness.

“By employing augmented and virtual reality, the internationally acclaimed Chinese multimedia artist addresses the future of mobility such as autonomous driving, airborne cars and digitalization,” according to BMW.

Fei’s creation, a carbon black 2017 BMW M6 GT3 racecar with matte black accents, made its debut at the Minsheng Art Museum in Beijing.

Her work consists of three different components: the car, a streaming light video, and colorful light particles that can only be seen via a dedicated augmented reality app. With out, the installation looks like, well, a normal carbon black racecar.

“To me, light represents thoughts. As the speed of thoughts cannot be measured, the #18 Art Car questions the existence of the boundaries of the human mind. We are entering a new age, where the mind directly controls objects and where thoughts can be transferred, such as unmanned operations and artificial intelligence,” said Cao Fei in a New Agey release.

The 2017 BMW M6 GT3 packs a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine under the hood that offers 585 horsepower. The V-8 is mated to six-speed sequential racing transmission and has a top speed of 174 mph.

“The 18th BMW Art Car is perfectly suited to this era. Cao Fei took the logical step of creating the first ever-digital Art Car. The augmented reality experience makes this BMW M6 GT3 unique. For everyone involved at BMW Motorsport it was both exciting and fascinating to work with Cao Fei and her team on this project,” said Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport director, in a statement.

“This makes 2017 a very special year in the history of BMW Art Cars. First, the BMW M6 GTLM Art Car of John Baldessari took to the track in Daytona, at the end of the season comes Art Car #18 by Cao Fei in Macau. This makes the tradition of BMW Art Cars livelier than ever.”

After making the art world circuit, Fei’s BMW will race at the FIA GT World Cup in Macau.

“It’s a huge honor for me to race Cao Fei’s BMW Art Car,” said Augusto Farfus, BMW works driver, about the project. “I’m extremely proud that I get the chance to drive my second Art Car this year. This is absolutely unique for a racing driver.”

NEVS 9-3 Concepts Build on Saab Heritage

National Electric Vehicle Sweden, which owns the main assets to Saab, is previewing its new 9-3 sedan and 9-3X SUV. The company’s electric vehicles will take part in a car-sharing and ride-sharing pilot program in Tianjin, China.

On its Instagram account, NEVS posted a photo of the 9-3 sedan and SUV concepts. The company is expected to announce more at the CES Asia show in Shanghai next month, but from these renderings we can see some hints of Saab showing through.

Beneath those updated fascias are the bodies of the 9-3 sedan and 9-3X crossover that ceased production in 2012, along with an electric drivetrain in place of the previous gas engines. Production at the Saab plant resumed earlier this year.

The 9-3 series goes on sale next year in China, and the company has already received more than 150,000 orders. NEVS estimates a range of more than 186 miles on a single charge. While borrowing the engineering know-how from Saab, the new vehicles add modern features such as WiFi hotspot, battery management via smartphone, and over-the-air software update capability.

NEVS rescued Saab from bankruptcy in 2012. While it lost the rights to use the Saab name on its vehicles, it acquired the main assets of the brand and its former Trollhattan production plant in Sweden. The company also has a plant in Fujian, China, and a new plant in Tianjin is still under construction but is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

Danny Summerhill Charged With Firing Gun on a Ride, Leaves UnitedHealthcare Team

Pro road cyclist Danny Summerhill has left the UnitedHealthcare team after being arraigned on Tuesday for disorderly conduct, discharging a weapon, and reckless endangerment.

Summerhill was riding in a rural area outside Denver, Colorado, in February when he was spotted firing a handgun several times into a hillside by local residents Joe and Shawn Porter, who reportedly confronted the 28-year-old American pro and filed a police report. (Keep up with the latest news about and for cyclists by subscribing to our newsletter.)

According to the Denver Post, Summerhill told a deputy that he was having a bad day and “needed to vent.” Summerhill also reportedly told the officer he didn’t know he was in a residential area and that it was illegal to shoot at the hillside.

According to the police report, Shawn says the area in which Summerhill fired his gun is “between two driveways, with a freestanding garage and a vehicle parked in front of it… with residences on both sides of the road.”

A Colorado native and former under-23 national title-holder in cyclocross, Summerhill’s most recent triumphs include stage wins at the 2017 Tour of Taiwan and Tour of Japan. He joined the UnitedHealthcare team in August 2012 from Team Garmin-Sharp-Barracuda, and first raced with UHC at the 2012 USA Pro Challenge.

Some things you really can’t do on a ride, but here are nine great things you can:

UnitedHealthcare team owner Momentum Sports Group issued this statement about Summerhill’s departure:

"Momentum Sports Group holds our athletes to the highest standards of ethical conduct and accountability—both on and off the road.  Following an internal investigation, we accepted Mr. Summerhill’s resignation from the team, effective immediately. The personal actions of one individual do not represent the values of our dedicated athletes, sponsors or fans, and we offer our sincerest apologies to anyone who may have been impacted."

Summerhill is scheduled to appear in court July 12 for a pre-trial hearing.

2019 Tour de France Honors Merckx With Brussels Start

The 2019 Tour de France will start in Brussels in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first of Eddy Merckx’s five victories, organizers said Tuesday. "It’s the least we could do," said Tour director Christian Prudhomme. "Eddy Merckx is an exceptional champion and a person of exceptional humility."

"I’m very emotional, I hope I’ll still be alive!" said the 71-year-old Merckx, a three-time world champion who holds the record for the most stage wins on the race, and who also won the Giro d’Italia five times and the Vuelta a Espana once. (Check out the exclusive, limited-edition Eddy Merckx alphabet poster in the Bicycling online store for some of The Cannibal’s legendary wisdom!)

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo added the 2019 Tour "will link Brussels to Paris, two cities that have recently suffered greatly from terrorism". "We wanted to find an event that ties our two cities."

Brussels has hosted the Grand Depart once before, in 1958. It will be the 23rd time a country outside France has been chosen for the start of cycling’s most famous stage race, and the fifth time from Belgium.
