BMW Introduces M5 Performance Parts at SEMA

At this week’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas, BMW introduced a selection of performance parts for the new M5. Many of these features will be available when the vehicle launches in the spring, while others will arrive in July 2018. BMW also introduced a special edition M3 to celebrate the model’s 30th year in the U.S. market.

BMW M Performance will offer motorsport stripes in M colors as well as a host of aerodynamic components made from carbon fiber for the BMW M5. These include a carbon-fiber rear spoiler and rear diffuser as well as side sill attachments and a newly designed front attachment.

Other M Performance goodies include a new coilover suspension and red coil springs, carbon ceramic brakes, and a new sports exhaust system with a titanium rear muffler. A carbon-fiber engine cover extension kit pops out to the keen observer when the hood is opened. Another feature records driving data and lets drivers display it on their smartphone. The Drive Analyzer records everything from engine data to speed, gear engagement, the use of accelerator and brake pedals, and lateral acceleration. An optional Tracfix action camera holder fits to the threaded bush of the towing lug to capture laps on film.

When it comes to the interior, BMW offers an M Performance steering wheel with Alcantara grip and a carbon fiber steering wheel cover. There are also newly designed carbon-fiber shift paddles and a carbon-fiber shift lever cover. An M Performance LED logo projector is also available.

To celebrate 30 years of the M3 in the U.S. market, BMW is selling a one-of-one model. It’s red on the outside, but open the doors and you’ll find a bold interior with red, white, and blue materials. Maybe the most appetizing part of the look are the bespoke golden wheels, which are surrounded by Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

The 2018 BMW M3 “30 Years American Edition” is based off the M3 Competition Package, which makes 444 hp. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission as well as a host of M Performance Parts, including the exhaust system, adjustable sports suspension lowering the ride height between 5 and 20 mm, and a rear wing handmade from carbon fiber.

So how much does this one-off M3 cost? BMW is selling it for $131,105.

Build Vision And Inspiration

Toyota paired with DG-Spec to build the C-HR R-Tuned as a testament to how far the C-HR could go in a track environment. It features a 2.4-liter Toyota 2AZ-FE with forged internals, reinforced valve-train, and a custom DG-Spec Garrett turbo system that pushes power output beyond 600 horsepower at approximately 23 psi of boost. This is linked to a five-speed Toyota E-Series manual transmission replacing the stock CVT.

A Commute Across the Duwamish

135s are usually categorized as portrait lenses for studio work, but if you take one to the streets, the subjects are as sharp as the schedules they keep. On an assignment for Sony Mirrorless Pro, I shot the morning commute across the Duwamish river.

Sigma 135 attached to an a7R.

Like the commuters, I cross it at least once every ride. The Duwamish is an industrialized estuary and Seattle’s only river. It’s estimated that less than 1/2 of Seattleites know the river exists or that it’s on the Superfund list.

Best known for the tech companies here, the tides of the Duwamish are a reminder that Seattle is really a port town and a hub of trade since the gold rush.

Be it gold, bits, or groceries delivered in an hour, Seattle has always boomed and busted. I don’t think I’ll see a bust again, been through 2 in my time here, but will photograph the industrial side of Seattle before it’s gentrified into condos and office buildings.

Deep in a 5-billion-dollar boom, the commuters rushed across the bridge to work and the construction cranes downtown, while tugs pushed freight along the Duwamish River and people fished for chum salmon at the port.

There’s a blue-collar essence to Seattle lost in the hum of tech like Amazon, jets at Boeing Field, and the smell of Starbuck’s coffee with whiffs of pungent cannabis grows.

Sigma 135: at the Port of Seattle.

I rode the Tern GSD and true to its name, it helped me get shit done, like a photo shoot.

Sigma 135: on the Spokane Street Bridge.
Sigma 135: with a pint at Naked City.
Sigma 135: on the bike path.
Sigma 135: fishing at the Port of Seattle.
Sigma 135: crossing the Duwamish.
Sigma 135: tugs pushing freight.
Sigma 135: train drawbridge.
Sigma 135: Concrete plant.
Sigma 135: bike share.

Read more about this morning commute shoot on Medium or Sony Mirrorless Pro, and I’ll have a full review of the Tern GSD soon.

1981 Toyota FJ Land Cruiser Restomod Wows at SEMA 2017

Wow—who knew Jeeps from the early eighties could still look so cool? The folks at The FJ Company sure do and brought this fully restored 1981 Toyota FJ Land Cruiser to this year’s SEMA show.

The latest project in their refurbished lineup is called the Signature edition. It was kicked off with a full frame-off restoration of an original 1981 FJ43 model. Once it was brought back to like-new condition it was painted in Toyota’s Dune Beige with a matte finish.

Up front, the trusty Land Cruiser gets a Warn 8274 winch mounted on a 40-series bumper, and Baja Designs LED fog lights.

Then the FJ was bedazzled with lots of accessories like an aluminum fuel cap cover and side mirrors painted in Gunmetal Gray.

Under the hood, there’s a new 4.0-liter V-6 engine that offers 240 horsepower. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Sorry, no paddle shifters here.

Stopping power has been updated with Toyota 4Runner 4-wheel disc brakes. A performance-tuned suspension system adds FOX shocks and Old Man Emu leaf springs.

Inside there’s Recaro seats, custom-designed window levers, door handles, pedals, shifters, and pull knobs—also in Gunmetal Gray.

There’s a canvas sunroof and windows when you get tired of all the cold A/C. Plus, there’s an iPad mounted to the center console for your iTunes. Neat!

The company says that 24 Signature builds are planned for production in 2018 and prices start at $200,000.

SEMA Gets Two Customized Kia Stinger GTs

Just in time for Halloween, Kia is debuting a bright orange Stinger GT with custom performance parts. The bespoke model, along with a widebody Stinger GT and special-edition Cadenza, debuted at the SEMA Show this week.

The Kia Stinger GT Federation features a bold orange paint job and body accent kits by Air Design USA. These kits bring along aggressive hood vents, a rear spoiler, and a rear diffuser. Twenty-inch TSW wrapped in Falken tires complete the look.

Underneath the sheetmetal, there is a K&N cold-air intake and a quad-tipped Borla exhaust. Kia dropped the model’s ride height and put in thicker anti-roll bars and Eibach springs to enhance the driving experience. Plus, an additional 15 hp from the twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 doesn’t hurt either. Now, the model produces an estimated 380 ponies.

Painted in a blue metallic color, the Stinger GT Wide Body finally makes an appearance after Kia teased it earlier this month. Turns out the model doesn’t look overdone at all. Instead, it features 21-inch Keen forged wheels wearing high-performance tires, as well as a modest lightweight carbon-fiber aero kit and rear diffuser.

Quad-port exhaust tips give the model a bit of extra personality, as does blue leather seat piping inside the cabin. Kia also lowered the suspension 1.4 inches up front and 1.2 inches in the back.

“Taking inspiration from the racing GT cars of the 1970s, this modern interpretation seamlessly blends tire accommodating wide fenders with the Stinger’s already narrow waist,” Kia said in a statement.

The model was produced in collaboration with West Coast Customs.

Kia’s other SEMA creation is a Cadenza with a metallic black paint job, tinted windows, and Cosmic Copper accents. This model also gets a lowered suspension, along with stiffened sport springs.

Inside, look for brown leather seats with suede inserts, hand-stitched suede on the dashboard, and more suede accents on the door panels. There is also a Harman Kardon 630-watt premium sound system and subwoofer.

The SEMA Show runs October 31-November 3.

Two More Extreme Chevrolet Colorado ZR2s Debut at SEMA

For more than a week we’ve been Chinese-water-torturing you with Chevy SEMA concepts, and today we’re finally allowed to reveal the last two. We started this barrage off with a pair of factory-orderable ZR2 packages (Midnight and Dusk), and today we finish off with a pair of wilder riffs on the off-road optimized Colorado ZR2 pickup.

Colorado ZR2 AEV Concept

Overland adventuring is becoming a thing. The concept involves hardening and outfitting a vehicle so that it can climb or winch itself over or around any obstacle, then equipping it with everything the adventurers need to survive for perhaps weeks in the bush. Chevy teamed with American Expedition Vehicles on this concept, which features a custom rack system in the bed that is designed to hold all the spare fuel cans, tires, a water source, supplies, and a generator. It’s also festooned with camp lights and an access panel on the rear of the outer driver-side quarter panel there’s a panel for distributing power, water, and compressed air. Naturally there’s a full complement of skid plates, rock rails, steel-tube bumpers with a winch, an elevated intake snorkel for deep fording, and 35-inch bead-lock wheels.

Colorado ZR2 Development Truck

Sure, the new ZR2 can go almost anywhere as it is, but might it be configured for even more extreme off-roading? This truck aims to answer that question while assessing the commercial viability of selling such extreme off-roading gear. To endow the truck with 20 percent more wheel travel, there are new high-articulation tie rod and suspension links, new ball joints and front half-shafts. The suspension is lifted by 0.8 inch in front, 0.4 inch in the rear, and the body is elevated 1.5 inch off the frame. The rear suspension gets a new third link to prevent axle-wrap and axle-hop under full power. Most of these parts have been developed on Chad Hall’s racing truck, so if they ever make it to production you can rest assured they’re race-hardened.

MXGP 3 landing on Nintendo Switch in November

Following its announcement a few months ago, Milestone has confirmed that its motorcross simulation MXGP 3 will be landing on Nintendo Switch on November 21st, thus filling the current void of bike racing games on the system.

No gameplay footage has been released of MXGP 3 running on Nintendo Switch, sadly, but the first screenshots show that the game appears to have suffered some visual cutbacks ks to run on the platform. Lighting doesn’t look as realistic, shadow quality has been reduced, and the ground textures look flat which makes us wonder if the game will still feature dynamic terrain deformation and weather.

You may recall that terrain deformation was removed in MXGP’s transition to the PlayStation Vita so it wouldn’t be surprising if it’s also missing in the Nintendo Switch version of MXGP 3 since the hardware is less powerful than the PS4 and Xbox One.

MXGP 3 features all of the riders, bikes, and tracks from the 2016 Motocross season, including the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, as well as an extensive career mode. It will mark Milestone’s first ever Nintendo release. Future MotoGP games may also be released on Nintendo Switch. Source: http://ift.tt/2vxLMhE
